This picturesque museum preserves the history and culture of indigenous people and was originally opened to the public in 1994. The 432-acre Oakbrook Regional Park houses this historical site where you can learn about how our predecessors lived on these lands centuries ago through interactive exhibits showcasing tools they used like bows or arrows; art pieces made from bones years ago which are still sharp today because the wood has never been saturated.
The 5,400-square-foot indoor Chumash Indian Museum features an impressive collection of artifacts from this ancient society. Visitors can see acorn-grinding tools, woven bowls, and other pieces made using traditional techniques that have been preserved for thousands upon millennia by our California ancestors.
The Chumash village displays a collection of houses that were once used for housing. The 25-acre preserve has miles upon endless trails which offer great outdoor exercise as well beautiful views from up high or down low, depending on your preference. There’s also four ethnobotany gardens located throughout the property where you can learn more about California native plants.
For those who enjoy a bit of ancient history, there are two rock shelters that showcase some impressive pictographs. Guided tours allow you to learn about this rare find and see them up close for yourself.
